That's too bad. I was hoping that this movie would be great. Now I'll just wait for the 55-minute version with all the shit edited out to show up on YouTube.
No, the movie is fine. Don't listen to the people who just want to post angry things on the internet, especially people who deride the first 20 minutes of getting to know the characters as pointless. I like Planet Terror as much as the next guy, if the next guy is the #1 Planet Terror fan, but even I see there is still a place for a movie that doesn't start with zombie murder in the opening credits. Cloverfield doesn't even have opening credits, so if we're talking about wasting your precious time, as least you won't get bored by seeing JJ Abrams' name in the producer slot.
Other pros I could mention include the commitment to the Blair Witch storytelling style which is still creepy, but this time executed on a big budget, which is great. I expected the camcorder to be abandoned eventually and it wasn't. They also commit to making the monster secondary to the small story of a small group of people. That's a good decision, and keeps the movie unique not just for execution. At no point do they run into a scientist who thinks he knows of a way to defeat the monster, if only they could help him get to his lab across town... They just run, for the whole movie [THAT WAS A SPOILER] and it's great for that.
If Cloverfield was a smaller movie and JJ Abrams didn't produce it, or perhaps if it was made in Japan, people would call it genius. That's not true either, of course, but it's somewhere between genius and FUCK YOU JJ ABRAMS YOU DOG ASS. |
