I don't know if anyone was CRANKED after Starfox 1 game out on the SNES and then had Nintendo Power preview the now dead sequel which was going to promise free flight and erasing the corridor shit, and letting you fly around a map to pick your missions. They scrapped the game and Starfox 64 was basically Starfox 1 but with better graphics and bigger fights, and also it had that submarine and tank and shit. Oh yeah and it had a couple missions where you didn't fly in a corridor, like that one awesome Independence Day type mission where you shoot down a big ass mothership.

The overhead map though is different, because you are on a planet and it says OKAY HERE IS A MISSION, DESTROY ENEMIES. Then you use the stylus to draw a path of your dudes on the map and they fly around engaging incoming enemy squads or going out and picking up power ups or attacking enemy bases. You have Fox always, but then they have a few other guys, like Slippy and Falco, who you draw paths for. It is all turn based, so you start a turn, draw your paths, try to intercept enemies, and then the round ends with you picking your pilots (up to 4) and which order you want to play their levels. When one of the guys intercepts an enemy squad or whatever, you take control of them fighting it out in a combat zone. It takes you into a big square arena with some plain enemies and then target enemies that you have to kill and collect star icons that they drop. When you get all the dudes who carry the icons and pick them up, you win the fight. Each mission has a timer which is supposed to be your fuel, and you can pick up extra fuel by killing some of the extra enemies. The flying isn't too bad after you get used to it, the top screen is the action, the bottom screen is a radar map that you just drag the stylus around to fly in the directions. Also, there are buttons on that screen, such as the U turn and loop moves, and then you get a few bombs sometimes which you can drag onto the radar to drop basically anywhere in the arena. So the game is pretty neat. I'd really rather control it with the control pad but whatever.

The main enemy bases, when you assault them, are a little disappointing because each one is just a hovering mothership. You have to kill a couple star icon carrying dudes and then it lets you assault the mothership, but instead of blowing off weak spots or blowing up open hatches or cool shit like that, it just makes you run through a bunch of targets as you fly straight up into the middle of the mothership and then do a barrel roll(!!!) and you blast through it and kill it. MEH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also what sucks is if you missle a single one of the flight markers it just instantly kills you, and if you don't do the barrel roll at the end it kills you.

The one other sort of cool type of mission is if the enemy bases fire missiles at your Great Fox ship, you can have one of your dudes intercept the missile and it goes into a corridor where you have to fly through more markers and you pick up tons of speed as you chase down this missile and once it's in range you have to spray lasers at it while still keeping in the path of the markers which come faster and faster. The missile dies in a couple hits so you don't even have to try to aim for it. Locking on works too.

Each of the pilots you get have different ships and weapons. Fox has the double laser and a couple of bombs and plenty of boost meter, and he can lock on. Slippy has tiny boost, but has the double plasma thing that is fawkin powerful and can carry 3 bombs, but no lock on. Falco has a gay bird design ship that looks like a bird. It has fuckin lasers, FUCK whatever. There are a couple LADY pilots you get and one of them has like a multi lock on. Bloo blee etc.

Eventually the game becomes turn management. You only get 6 turns max, and the only way to get fresh turns is to take out an enemy base/mothership. If even one single enemy squad touches the Great Fox base ship it explodes game over. You can pick up Great Fox missiles around a battle zone when drawing your path which will target and destroy enemy squads anywhere at the beginning of a round, but it's way more likely that you'll be manually intercepting them with your pilots.

So anyway, it's a pretty cool game, combining turn based TACTIX with classic Starfox flying around shooting shit. The bosses so far are pretty disappointing, the corridor system really worked well for boss fights in the previous games because you couldn't turn all the way around on accident, you'd just hug the wall trying to stay out of range of a giant beam or whatever.

Oh yeah, a goofy custom option in the game lets you base all of the game's voices on your voice by speaking into the mic. It just asks you general questions about things, like what's your pet's name, what's your favorite food. Then it takes your examples and slashes them all up and mixes the sounds randomly to turn them into Fox's voice or whatever with different modulation and pitch for the different characters. So I answered "damn" to every question, so now the characters all say damn damn damn damn damn over and over again, just like Fox does at the very beginning of Starfox 1.

Well maybe 6.9 is more accurate. NT by Jhoh Creebul, Witch Toucher O_O 01/29/2008, 12:55pm PST NEW
