A good Qt3 thread about PC piracy.
I don't mean "good" in the "so bad it's good" way that I normally link off-forum threads, but actually good. It starts with a guy who developed Titan Quest lamenting PC piracy, and basically blaming it for poor sales and ultimately shutting down Iron Lore Entertainment. People can't believe that the piracy checks in TQ forced game slowdown and CTDs. Deep into the thread there is an argument with Valve's Chet and Maxis' Chris Hecker who thinks piracy is fine (not as much of an issue when you're working on megahuge Spore, of course, which someone points out).
In between there is lots of crazy shit too, once you get past the discussion of Titan Quest's wacky copy protection. People explaining that it's easy to port any game to the PC since all games are developed on the PC (do the math, people), other people advocating in-game advertising (!!!) to make up the shortfall in PC sales (they should go easy on the pro-advertising tip, lest they get their posting privileges revoked), and finally the developer of Galactic Civilizations II suggesting that ISP decide to drop packets from sites like Pirate Bay at their discretion. |
