Hey who likes cringing? by Jerry Whorebach 07/22/2008, 6:41pm PDT So I'm meeting this mental health nurse for the first time. She's supposed to help me somehow, like with all my mental problems? I don't really understand. Anyway, she's asking me all these questions about my background and do I have any friends (no) and so on, trying to get to know me. Then she asks me what I think my purpose is in life, like why do I think I exist. That's kind of a big question! So I think about it for a second, shrug, and say "I suppose my genes need a sack." "Your what?!" she exclaims. My eyes dart to the crucifix on her wall and it suddenly occurs to me that she might be one of those Christians who doesn't believe in genes, but she wears eyeglasses and uses the telephone so how fucking backward could she be? No, she must have just misheard me. "My genes," I reply, bright-eyed and sincere. She still looks shocked. Weird, but what can I do? So we conclude the interview and I make an appointment to see her again in two weeks. Then, as I'm walking home, it hits me, and suddenly her behaviour makes sense: she didn't hear genes and think Richard Dawkins, she heard jeans and thought Lenny Bruce! I almost drove my palm straight through my face :(
