A horrible attempt to rip off Wes Anderson without understanding what made Rushmore great.

Honestly, I don't see any relationship between Napolean Dynamite and Rushmore. If anything, it's more like Bottle Rocket, since all the characters are crazy idiots. And, like in Bottle Rocket, all the comedy comes from the funny-talking.

I would say it has more in common with a Coen Bros. movie than a Wes Anderson movie, though, because the Coens not only have that "we're making an unrealistically-acted movie on purpose" (which is shared by both Dynamite and Rushmore), they also base their movies on the simple concept of: when people talk funny, that's pretty funny.

People talk funny in Napolean Dynamite. HILARIOUS.

Rushmore aims to do a little more than that. (I think Rushmore is a great movie. Napolean Dynamite is just funny.)

Yeah, I guess this is just where we're going to have to differ with regard to humour. I was all set to love Napoleon Dynamite, but people just acting stupid, with dumb catchphrases? That's where Saturday Night Live is now. It's not like any of the characters were actually developed in any way. There might have been a few instances that felt like bad lifts from Rushmore, like the part where (I think) Napoleon runs away over a fence and falls over it exactly like Bill Murray in Rushmore, that coloured my belief that it was a bit of a rip-off.

I can kind of see the Bottle Rocket comparison, but even in that film, Luke Wilson's character has that whole relationship with the Latina maid and it's not always played for stupidity. I hated every single character in Napoleon, which I can't say for Bottle Rocket. Unfortunately, I think Wes Anderson's films ARE moving towards quirky characters for the sake of quirky characters, which is why I wasn't as into Royal Tenenbaums, and why I'm hoping The Life Aquatic won't fall too far into that trap -- I haven't seen it yet.
