I still haven't played Gears of War 2 or Mirror's Edge or most of that shit, because Gamefly has fucked with me for the last time with throttling, I swear to god if they want to charge me postage, they fucking can.
Army of Two is a pretty fantastic co-op game (to specifically be played with a friend) where you just run around as a PMC killing everyone, until they march out a guy they armored in scrap metal, and you kill his ass too. I played it eight hours straight in the span of one day. The shopping crap is fun, and the game is appropriately silly in cutscenes. Every door, computer panel, or switch requires teamwork which is flaming gay but totally hilarious. So it's basically Gears co-op but lots more bubbly and carefree, it uses a pretty simple aggro meter to determine who's getting shot at (the guy with the gold plate minigun) and it has some great arcadey shit like 2x damage modes that really liven stuff up. They definitely should have released it as two discs for 60 bucks with no single player and expanded multiplayer content, or possibly included some kind of "spawn mode". It's fun with anyone, it's just not fun alone.
Also it made a do not buy list.

GAY & LESBIAN: Homosexual Themes: Although never spoken of, undertones of homosexuality are present. Weaponry in the game can be decorated to be anything from diamond encrusted to gold plated. You share a parachute with your partner and the riot shield system allows one player to use a shield or car door as portable cover while the other cuddles up close behind and dispenses "lead" from his "iron"
I like that the guy who is describing weaponry like he's fucking John Wayne is protecting us all from homosexuality.

Persona 4 like Fallout 3 was in my mind as one of the great November releases. While I still feel that November includes the months of October and December, I guess I might as well go into it.
What's so impressive with Persona 3 and Persona 4 is that they are games that took a genre that I think most self respecting people haven't touched since FF7 and actually made some fucking progress with it. Isolating all conversation and fighting they let you basically control the pacing of the game, so if you just wanted to level up your guys you had it and if you just wanted to read dialog you had it. They're still 80 hour games, sure, but it pulls me in a little more than underwater soccer.
I think the other thing that's amazing is that Persona 3 and Persona 4 mark advancement in JRPGs than there has been in CRPGs since Black Isle disbanded. I mean Bioware is still making Kotor and forever will be making Kotor, everything Obsidian involves themselves with just reeks of "WE LIKED TORMENT", and oddly the only people producing something people have fun with are Bethesda who have constantly caught shit for "dumbing things down" from the RPG gestalt.
While it has rather long intro, I think pretty much anything I bitched about in my last review of Persona 3 was fixed, you can resume dungeons at specific floors, your skills have full descriptions wherever they're listed (minus points for Auto-Tarujuka being "Tarujuka effect on constantly through battle"), your main character's death still means game over but your allies can push him out of the way now (which means 3 extra lives per battle), and the overall gloominess of the game is lifted for a more high-schooly feel(but that might be the absence of people shooting themselves in the head). |
