I don't know Fussbett I have never based a download decision on "popularity" by Zsenitan 01/02/2009, 12:41am PST
I'm better than you but that's secondary to this discussion.

Mostly when I download something it's because
* I heard a cool-ass track linked on a place like 20jfg
* The band, album, or song name indicates potential goodness
* Why not it's free

But you know me, I'll listen to anything as long as it's gay as a goose.

If you're a guy with more specific music tastes (no way!), try the following:

1) Pick a few albums that clearly indicate what kind of music you're looking for
2) Find some people with those albums
3) Narrow down your pool to people for whom the majority of their collection, or subfolders of their total share, is comprised of albums of this genre

On paper this looks absurd, but on slsk there are two types of people who will be your friends: specialists and guys who only share a few of their genre folders.

4) Download whatever looks good from these new friends of yours

I would also recommend just gritting your teeth and finding some blogs to love - blogs full of recommendations for people with specific musical tastes. You can also get some mileage out of aggregators like Hype Machine.

Soulseek is the opposite of Oink in that enjoying music is not punishable by banning. It is legitimate to just grab a song or two from an album! And just listen to them and decide if you like them or not and then delete them if you don't! Also nobody is checking your ratio, so you can be a huge dick and set your upload speed to 1 ks and leech away.
