Not that anybody cares, but it rectifies what I thought one of the biggest hindrances to my enjoyment of the game was: Asteroid Belt/Gas Giant/Planetoid areas were strategically worthless because of the limited or non-existent ability to put down defensive structures and economy boosters. The starbases use capital ship capacity and you have to have three military labs up and running already, so it's not a game breaker. With this you can build starbases in any area that can have defensive/economic structures built onto it. You can convert a Gas Giant system (previously nothing but a glorified rest stop) into a chokepoint if you invest enough resources into it, and you can avoid the capacity issues that cropped up towards the late game.
Oh, and also you can lay down minefields (that can only be seen by scouts, reintroducing them as useful ships) to deter siege frigate rushes, and existing weapon platforms also got a boost. |
