Surprisingly, not shitty. I did have problems with the game but they all basically amounted to incredibly powerful enemies in normal mode from the moment you see an assault rifle. They all have armor piercing ammo and have the satisfying ability, most likely copied from UT, to switch weapons. Unfortunatly for you they switch to ultra accurate .50 explosive shot pistols, or flamethrowers. Any enemies who dont have those are typically equipped with rocket launchers and I'm talking about the third mission (!).
The thing that really made me enjoy the game was the writing and story. Yes I know, sounds like stupid bullshit, but amazingly the characters can talk without making you want to mute all the audio. The main characters you are partnered with are very interesting with some fascinating backstories and personalities. Then the game makes you care about these friends by getting you involved in their problems, exploring some moral dilemmas, and actually giving these people some depth (at least that's what I thought) as you have some nice conversations with them and progress through the story arc. THEN THEY GET KILLED.
I dunno maybe I have bad taste but I liked the way this game was designed and stuff. Of course the graphics engine was extemely powerful for its time and almost holds up to todays standards. It's so powerful that the exploding barrels still crash my higher end computer today. :(
There is just no way Unreal 3 is going to have a better story than this game. Yea yea SOUNDS GAY DOESNT IT. Well it is gay, but I was honestly interested in the plot and dialogue inbetween losing 75 health to a guy with a fucking rocket launcher/assault rifle even tho my armor was over 150. O yea and the shooting elements are not bad, but this would really be just a next generation Quake 2 with dodging if not for the amazingly not shitty story. It's no Half Life 2, but at least it's a better game than Doom 3. |
