Final Fight: Double Impact was 50% off a few months ago and I forgot to tell you by Jerry Whorebach 03/11/2012, 7:17am PDT It's good. It's Final Fight running in some emulator, with a nice-looking virtual cabinet and simulated CRT filter. It's also $10, which is at least twice what it would've cost you in quarters to clear the original game. They try to justify the price by also including Magic Sword, a single-plane barbarian hack and slash (and pseudo-sequel to Black Tiger?) that ran on the same CP System arcade board as Final Fight. Hence the DOUBLE IMPACT subtitle. Unfortunately, Magic Sword isn't that great; there's too much happening on the screen at one time and none of it makes any sense unless you read the instructions. I know from a transition screen that it takes a Diamond Ring to recruit the Lizard Man on Level 14 of the Evil Lord Drokmar's Tower, but I have no idea where to get a Diamond Ring, how to tell if I have one, or even if the Lizard Man makes a better ally than the Cleric or Thief I'd be giving up. There's probably a very long FAQ somewhere that explains all the intricacies of Magic Sword's gameplay, what I can't figure out is which part of "I just bought Final Fight" made the developers think I might enjoy reading it. In the interests of constructive criticism, here's a list of the top five games I would've rather seen bundled with Final Fight. #4 & 5 (TIE): Final Fight 2 or Final Fight 3 Final Fight 3 is so much better than Final Fight 2 it's criminal, but I understand you probably can't release a package that's just Final Fight and Final Fight 3 without ruffling a few feathers, so either sequel would've been fine by me. The reason these rank so low is because they were SNES exclusives and I have no idea if it's technically or legally feasible to put them on an Xbox. That's also why all the rest of my picks are CPS games. #3: The King of Dragons A Final Fight clone set in a generic fantasy milieu. I think this would've made a good compromise between my desire to play Final Fight and the developers' desire to make me think about wizards. #2: Saturday Night Slam Masters I used to think this game had a pretty great title. Then I found out it was known in Japan as Muscle Bomber: The Body Explosion. I still think our title is okay. Whatever you want to call it, this four-player professional wrestling simulator includes a playable Mike Haggar, which means it has about a thousand times more in common with Final Fight than anything with a lizard man in it. #1: Captain Commando The closest thing to a direct sequel to Final Fight on Capcom hardware, this near-identical clone takes place in Metro City in the far-flung future year of 2026. Selectable characters include a cyborg commando, a ninja commando, a mummy commando, and a baby genius riding a bipedal robot commando. The only problem with this game is that it might actually be too good for second-billing on a Final Fight port. Hopefully, Capcom is hard at work as we speak, subcontracting Captain Commando: Double Impact (featuring Battle Circuit Magic Sword again).
