I'm the last guy who should be answering this question, given that gaining weight has never really been a problem for me FROWNY FACE. But since you came to me, I'm just going to assume you've already exhausted every other option and are about five seconds away from blowing your brains out, so I'll give it my best shot.
I guess the first thing I'd tell you is that, unless you're dangerously underweight, you're probably already heavy enough. Don't believe me? Try looking at some pictures of fighters in your weight class (it's not gay if you finish on a picture of a girl). Stop worrying about gaining weight, and just focus on getting what you have into shape. You might not displace any more water, but you'll sure as hell start to look and feel a lot stronger.
Since I'm not sure where you're at in terms of fitness right now, I'll be operating on the premise that you're completely hopeless, because why else would you be asking me? So, maybe try walking two miles a day. That's pretty easy. If you're feeling really energetic, you could jog some of it, but it's truly not necessary. The important part is just getting used to going out and wasting a half hour or forty minutes out of every precious day you have on this planet doing something you don't want to for no immediate gain. I guess you could start by strapping on a sixty pound pack and running straight up the nearest hill, but that's just going to make you never want to leave the house again. So take it easy! You're in a marathon, not a sprint. And not a literal marathon either.
At the same time, you might want to find some really simple, braindead, no-equipment-necessary exercises you could see yourself doing every day, and then do them every day. How about one set of push-ups? Just do as many as you can, once a day. And sit-ups are good, but one set every second day ought to be enough for them. And on the days you're not doing sit-ups, how about one... no... THREE sets of chin-ups? They're kinda fun to do, like playing on monkeybars, and you'll start to see improvement almost immediately. Those are pretty good motivators!
Finally, how about setting some goals for yourself? Say, fifty push-ups / a hundred sit-ups / twenty chin-ups per set? It could take you months to get there - possibly a whole lot of months, depending on where you're starting from - but you'll do it, and it's impossible you won't gain lean mass along the way. It's just like grinding in an RPG: it doesn't take any skill or cleverness, just a high boredom threshold and the bare minimum amount of sticktoitiveness.
There are probably more efficient ways to get in shape, but I'd be hard pressed to think of any more foolproof. |
