So I got the low res version of Freespace 2 at The Underdogs and I tried to get ALL THREE FUCKING CDs of the full version using eDonkey, but guess what, 5k/sec isn't going to cut it. SA is a like bittorrent shrine now and I have to say it's a clever little program. For those who don't know BitTorrent is it's a sort of a P2P protocol, but it seeks to use the usually unused upload bandwith of the downloaders as a way to alleviate server stress and to generally increase download speeds. Basically it fragments files into chunks and when you DL from the main server, it gives you random chunks. While you are getting chunks from the server, other people are getting other random chunks and sending the ones you don't have along to you. You get more chunks and you send your chunks on to others. Obviously the more people downloading a file at any given time, the faster the DL speed. I've seen blazing speeds with this thing. It starts slow but can easily reach the 400k/sec realm.
Anyway, SB you've stated that you certainly have the space, but I don't know how you pay for bandwidth. But I was wondering how this could be implemented at Caltrops. I'm pretty sure that you can throttle it server-side to stay within nominal usuage, etc. I'm no freeloader and I'm willing to send money along to help the cause. Also, I'm not asking for anything horribly illegal, no warez or anything. This is just a ping of sorts to see what other people think and to see how practical it is given SB and v's specs. I'm also not sure how much bittorrent eases the strain on servers for downloads because I've never hosted a BT. All these things are open to discussion. |
