So I got the low res version of Freespace 2 at The Underdogs and I tried to get ALL THREE FUCKING CDs of the full version using eDonkey, but guess what, 5k/sec isn't going to cut it. SA is a like bittorrent shrine now and I have to say it's a clever little program. For those who don't know BitTorrent is it's a sort of a P2P protocol, but it seeks to use the usually unused upload bandwith of the downloaders as a way to alleviate server stress and to generally increase download speeds. Basically it fragments files into chunks and when you DL from the main server, it gives you random chunks. While you are getting chunks from the server, other people are getting other random chunks and sending the ones you don't have along to you. You get more chunks and you send your chunks on to others. Obviously the more people downloading a file at any given time, the faster the DL speed. I've seen blazing speeds with this thing. It starts slow but can easily reach the 400k/sec realm.

I saw the same thing on eDonkey. Let me throw this out there, as a possibility, too:

A bunch of us chip in and one of us takes the funds and buys Freespace 2 off eBay. That person then makes a copy of all three discs and sends them to everybody who pitched in. I'm not sure offhand just how many others are interested in getting the thing in addition to you and me, CB, but if there were a few of us then that could be feasible.

(Disclaimer: if Interplay announced tomorrow that they were selling the thing for $50 on their on-line store or wherever, I'd obviously be all over that and go that route.)

the dark and gritty...Ice Cream Jonsey!

You can count me in on any buying deal. Short-term I want FS2 hi-res. Long-term I think it would be neat to be able to share stuff if feasible. There are enough of us to make things go and I think most of us are conscientious enough to help the other out. But again it depends on support.

Anyway, I'll keep my eyes open. E-mail me at jdohmann@adelphia.net

Seriously, I think you guys should try limiting your UL speed. I cut mine to 4 kb/sec, which limits my DL speed to 6x that. That seemed to be the balance point on my ADSL line, and I mostly got speeds of around 19-24 k/s. Leaving the max UL speed limit up, I was getting killed and had the same problems as you folks. Two days later and I was no longer a slave to price-gouging eBayers.
