If you, SB, have the time to read every post and all of slashdot and climb the walls and surf the internet all day, you have the time to learn a scripting language to round out your already considerable unix skills. The economy's not going to suck forever and someday you may want to try making a dime off of your ability: a. You can learn enough to help ES: Subcom recommended to me a while back the book "PHP and MYSQL Web Development, 2nd Ed" by Welling and Thomson. I ignored him at first, but he was right: It's so good the "example forum code" looks like they ripped it right off an early, primitive version of Chet's very own forum code (...or did they?) The mysql stuff is real close to pgsql anyway, and I've been fiddling with it on a local server for like 6 months now, definitely a good book. Or b. You can write backend admin code with perl or c shell scripts to hunt down IPs, find offending posts, whatever. Cursors, and well basically any SQL control functions, have a bit of a learning curve, but it's not like we lack free time, eh? If you're having that much of an issue doing it by hand, you need automation. Since I'm no great programmer, I'll refer to the advice given me by a really good programmer: if you know you'll have to do it more than twice, write a fucking program the first time.
