It's beyond that, at this point. The Xbox 360 has a failure rate of 54%. The wide variation of PCs mean that your computer can warm boot at any moment during game play. People my age have kids, wives that nag the hell out of them, a neighbor that needs to discuss your lawn and a billion other distractions. Maybe you get 20 minutes to sit down and play a video game - save-anywhere is trivial to put in, so it's inexcusable to not have it. (Emulato-style save states are also acceptable.)

But it doesn't matter, the industry drives away people when they become adults with families, for the most part, so not having 48 straight hours on the weekend to play some new bag of shit honestly doesn't occur to many of the developers making these fucking things. (I guess art and sound guys are off the hook, as they can't contribute anything negative to the discussion.) Furthermore, most games are terribly made by terrible people and while I'd agree with Gutsby in theory that save checkpoints would be an ideal solution for design, those designers aren't making games. Who knows what they are doing, they're not making games for sale in our countries.

The last game I picked up was Fatal Frame II for the original Xbox. Spooky game. Lofty game. I was under the impression that you take photographs of ghosts in Fatal Frame games. Instead, I'm moving two Japanese broads around with that fucked up Resident Evil Pre-Resident Evil 4 control scheme engaged in some gay pixel hunt or something. I have no idea. Twenty minutes in, I got sick of that shit and felt I would be better aggravated by Blue Jay highlights than that horseshit. I would have liked to have saved it so I could pick it up at another day when I was more in the mood. Haha, there's no saving in Fatal Frame II. (For all I know, there's no saving at all.) I turned my Xbox off rather than leave it on for an entire day, because it would be terrible if the thing overheated and I wasn't able to play such classics. And that's fucking retarded.

It's not that my time is valuable, it's not. I waste the great majority of it. I just don't have a lot of it. I prefer to play a game for ten minutes, get some other stuff done, come back to the game an hour later and repeat the cycles. I don't stick with arcade and text games because they are the two best genres, I go back to them because they are the only ones that let you leave immediately.

I don't know. In all my time playing these stupid things, I've never been with a checkpoint game and felt that there was added tension. Instead, when I inevitably got killed and had to re-do the last hour of play, I ended up cursing the dumb motherfuckers who made the thing. Maybe in a thousand years games will be good enough where the checkpoint/tension thing exists and is common and is the default rather than the rarity.
