I was gonna make a long list of everything this ripped off, but for the same reason that none of us need to actually see gameplay footage to know a game is going to be terrible, we all know what it stole and from where. I have to admit I'm impressed they are this far along, what with them recording brand-new sounds for the shotgun and so forth. The part I wish I could've seen is - okay, they probably hired some additional staff for this, and brought a whole bunch of people in for interviews. There's all these poor kids in this terrible economy hoping, hoping!!! to get a video game job and then the producer smugly tells them a few details about how HE has re-imagined X-COM (sorry, XCOM) and mentions how he's setting it in the 1950s. And at that point the producer can't help but smile at how creative and precious his amazing vision is, and these poor fucking kids have to sit there and choke on their words, unable to state that someone just made a billion dollars in video games off that literally last year. That's why you accept the water they offer you, so you can sip it right there instead of calling the guy in charge of this piece of twitchy filth a miserable hack. (Note: still hoping for a great game here.)
Here's another American decade that would have been a better choice than the fifties: the forties. Wait, don't click over to Metafilter, I have another one: the thirties. How do I do it. One of the side quests for the game set in the '30s could be a Kaboom!-style mini-game where you work to SAVE the people the aliens throw off the tall buildings, but mercifully let the failed stockbrokers committing suicide splat and die. Oh, I've got one last decade that is so amazingly creative, there's not even a catchy name for it: 1910-1919. God, my cock is hard, I'm going to go acquire the Freespace name and make it card-cataloging software. BE-WARE THE COLOSSUS.
Also, it would be a nice touch if the funding in "XCOM" here was in 1950 dollars, so you could hire engineers at $11,000 a year, but I know they'll either fuck that up or not have any hiring in the game.
