| I recently changed a P3 1gHz for a Celeron 600 mHz, mainly because Celerons are so shitty. I agree I could have gotten much more speed by changing the mobo, but I wanted to spend as little money as possible. In addition to the CPU swap I added 128 MB of RAM. Previously this PC would clunk along with simple Windows navigation; it runs at a pretty nice clip now (using 98FE, not 2000 or XP). Anyway I made sure of the socket type and ordered the fastest CPU that would fit it at Newegg.com. I think it was $60. I took out the old one, put in the new one, put in the RAM, powered up, changed the BIOS setting for my CPU, and everything detected and installed fine. I ended up reinstalling Windows however since it was ME at the time and ME is terrible. =(
The only other tips I might add are: 1. Ground yourself before touching any PC components by grabbing something metal (like the inside of the tower) with your other hand. 2. Sometimes removing the CPU requires a little force, but don't overdo it or something will snap. 3. Arctic Silver paste between the CPU and heatsink is good. =) Later. |
