Aegis Wing (**)
Pros: Free. Better than most of the shmups I played on Super Nintendo.
Cons: Not as good as the very best shmups on Super Nintendo, which is really what it's competing with these days.
Thunder Spirits: Says hi.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (****)
Pros: What Diablo would've been like were it made by the developers of Contra instead of Rock 'n' Roll Racing. (Much better gameplay, slightly worse music.)
Cons: I had to look at a walkthrough to solve the stopwatch puzzle. I hate doing that!
Doom (****)
Pros: Pre-mouselook controls map perfectly to a gamepad. Complex levels make Call of Duty look like Final Fantasy XIII.
Cons: Plays at thirty frames per second. What the fuck? Did they run out of cores or something?
Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved (****)
Pros: The game that proved once and for all who is the world's greatest human being, me or Worm.
Cons: I'd managed to forget how much I hated PGR3 when I wrote the parent post to this thread. Playing it again, it's clearly a one-star game at best.
What about PGR4?: PGR4 can keep the second star just to show how bad PGR3 is.
Hexic HD (****)
Pros: Fun. Relaxing. Comes pre-installed on every hard drive. I don't have a bad word to say about this game.
Caution: If for some reason you delete it, I don't think there's any way you can get it back. It's precious like that.
Jetpac Refuelled (***)
Pros: I reviewed this one already.
Cons: It gets hard towards the end. If I ever manage to beat all 128 levels, you know I'm coming back here to hang another star on this one.
Lumines Live! (****)
Pros: The only falling blocks game I've played that's as good as Tetris.
Cons: I ended up buying all the money-gouging DLC - even the Rockin' Holiday Pack (which is awesome, btw).
OutRun Online Arcade (***)
Pros: Fantastic port of OutRun 2 SP.
Cons: Unlike OutRun 2006, this doesn't include the courses from vanilla OutRun 2. Why aren't they available as DLC?
Pac-Man Championship Edition (****)
Pros: I don't care what MAME says, this is exactly how I remember original Pac-Man from when I played it as a child.
Cons: All my high scores got wiped when they reset the tables :(
Rez HD (***)
Pros: The same experience as watching the movie TRON, only better in every conceivable way.
Cons: I've given so many games four stars already that I'm worried I might run out before I get to Space Giraffe.
Sonic the Hedgehog / Sonic the Hedgehog 2 / Streets of Rage 2 (**)
Pros: Gorgeous games.
Cons: Mediocre ports. Damn you, SEGA!!
Space Giraffe (****)
Pros: It's a lot less bewildering after the patch - now bullets have to actually touch your giraffe to kill it.
Cons: I suspect the lousy sales of this game went a long way towards killing the $5 price point on XBLA.
Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (***)
Pros: There is no better fighting game than any version of Street Fighter II.
Cons: You can play with the original character sprites but not the original backgrounds. Sirlin should know better.
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (**)
Pros: I bet this is one of those games that really comes alive in multiplayer.
Cons: Crippling social anxiety disorder means I'll never know for sure. |
