I expect the counter-argument to be "Didn't you enjoy Legos when you were a kid? Isn't Minecraft fundamentally the same?"

1.) Yeah, I loved Legos when I was a kid! Now they are a rare, fleeting diversion.

2.) Legos were much more interactive. Not only are there more moving parts in a box of Legos than in the entire world of Minecraft but also I can move Lego creations around with my hands. A Lego firetruck is a toy firetruck. A Minecraft firetruck is a statue that took 7 hours to assemble. Also, you can move little Lego people around your playfield and make up stories and play. With Minecraft you can make statues, befriend a dumb dog, kill dumb mobs, or get griefed.

I guess the lack of interactivity in Minecraft is the key complaint.

Even with the limited selection of building blocks, I've tried out a few different styles and ended up with several interesting buildings. You really really gotta try to ignore the youtube stuff -- if it's new to you, it's fun. I hadn't seen mob farm before, and when I saw one someone had built I thought it fucking rocked. I hadn't heard of the Nether in this game, and that was pretty cool too. The "nothing new under the square sun" feeling might pass and you may get inspired to make something cool. Seeing the stuff on the public server fills me with a creative urge. Also, the public server is cool because other folks can see what you've done (and jack your shit, but oh well).

Exploring underground, by land, and by "boat" -- fucking wooden tub BETTER BOATS PLZ NOTCH -- is pretty fun for me still. And there's a map item you can craft that helps a little bit for above-ground operations.

And it's FOUR kinds of mobs. 33% more than you remembered! My friends and I voted and agreed to call 3 or more Creepers a "goddamnit" of Creepers. I'd love to see that meme spread. :D
