It takes a long-ass time, but it'll happen. Doing pull-ups is some of the toughest shit you can do, when I started doing them years ago, I was already super fit but could barely do one. After YEARS of daily use of a pull-up bar at home it levelled out at like 15-16, currently I can only do 12 because I'm about 20 pounds overweight now. What can I say, I like my beer.
Personally I find that dumbbell curls are too stressful on the back and arm joints, I say concentrate on the pull-ups.
