It has to be deterministic (or close to it) for the simulation to be very helpful, but even so, it's got enough subtlety in it that to a beginner, it may as well be mostly random. Which makes me wonder whether the simulation is training wheels that fall away as you become an expert player--still an essential feature for supporting those players who only do the campaign and then stop, and for helping to train would-be experts, but no longer necessary once you've actually learned the rules. But then, there are probably still many times when you really need to know whether the rocket explosion will just barely kill your guy or just barely not kill him, whether the hallway that the enemy sniper is looking down is just narrow enough for your unit to run across without being shot or just wide enough to be impassable, etc. |
