A new French Shmup Superplayer has published an English pdf sharing his secrets not only for getting top tier scores in bullet hell shmups like Dodonpachi and Guwange, but how he managed to get that good at these games so quickly compared to learning in the arcade.

Part of his secret? Using MAME save states to practice optimum scoring paths through the hard parts over and over again.

He justifies this method by comparing an optimal scoring run through a shmup to playing a piece of music that starts out easy and steadily gets more and more challenging. If you screw up a part in the latter half of the song, you don't start the entire song over again and play up to the section you're struggling with, you isolate that section, even if it's a single measure, and play it over and over again until you've mastered it.
