Subject: Writer for Forbes plays illegal emulated version of game being re-released and talks about it like it ain't no thing?
Q: Is it Illegal?
A: Sure, but unlikely to be prosecuted.
Q: Is it likely to lose business for the people re-releasing the game?
A: Probably not. Their target demographic are collectors still rocking physical super nintendos. Having physical copies of games is more important to them than experiencing the software on the cheap. It's not like they wouldn't know emulation is an option.
Q: Is a small publisher resurrecting a lost game from years ago subject to less consideration than a huge studio producing a multimillion dollar franchise game?
A: If a small publishing house bought the rights to, then by some miracle managed to cobble together a complete director's cut of the 1973 version of "The Wicker Man" and was selling it as a $20 collector's edition Blu-Ray on the same day that Michael Bay's TMNT movie comes out on Blu-Ray for $20, I really can't imagine anyone not saying that bootlegging the Wicker Man would be morally worse than bootlegging a Michael Bay abortion. Why shouldn't videogames be held to the same standard?
Q: Is this Forbes guy a hypocrite for admitting he pirates games?
A: Since he's a guy whose livelihood is protected by copyright law, I'd say so. Certainly he's shot himself in the foot by not watching his stupid mouth. If he ever appears on a fox pundit show as a hostile guest, the first thing they will do before giving him a chance to speak is bring up this article to immediately put him on the defensive. |
