You can apply at my company, I know we need a new "buildmonkey" and it sounds like you'd be great. Bad news is it's a good long ways south of you at about 6th and I-70. Email me if you want more info!

Meant to say - thank you! I ended up getting an in-person interview with the place I was talking about at the beginning of the thread. They brought me in for a four hour interview, three of which I'd be on a laptop with a one-hour review at the end.

The QA lead wanted me to write up manual test cases for their app on iOS, Android and the web and also develop automation in Java using Selenium over eight pages for their web application. There was no way to finish that in three hours, so I spent 45 minutes writing up "manual test cases" in Notepad and then 2 hours and 15 minutes going from a blank page to the start of a Selenium framework. I got two pages out of the 8 automated. I was coding faster and more accurately than at any other point in my career, admittedly it was exhilarating. I felt like a machine!

I met with them for the last hour and one of the manual test cases I wrote read, "Ensure that the app, when placed on iOS says 'Foobar.'" The guys there said, hey, it shouldn't say that. That's our competitor. I have seen a lot of apps have different names when they are your phone so I thought nothing of it at the time.

As it turns out, they have a competitor that has cloned their app. Or they cloned the competitor. Or they both pulled from the same datasource somewhere. I was going so quickly, and their competitor's app looked so much like their Android and web service that I honestly didn't notice.

I didn't get an offer (I was told they "couldn't get past" the fact that I had the wrong app up in that instance) but at the same time asking for about 20 hours of work over multiple platforms to be compressed into three was a shitty thing to do, in my opinion. I remember saying, "I couldn't finish it all in the time allotted" and someone was like, "That's OK." If that's OK then rework your interview into something realistic.

... I did like the part where I started developing automation they could peruse (I hooked it up to the Jenkins build server I had on my laptop for chrissake -- the laptop is there generating green/red ball results). But there was a lot of questions about why I did things a certain way in writing my code that were essentially arbitrary. The lead had contempt for Selenium IDE and one of the other testers said that he uses it all the time. What FoK said earlier in the thread rang true, I really got the sense that there was a sense of smugness to the entire proceeding.

I wasn't that broken-up when I got the email saying that they declined. Afterwards, though, I checked in with a friend that works at a place half a mile from where I live. They were looking to hire an automation engineer and had written up a job description that day. I had one phone interview, one interview with the QA lead and one with a couple developers and aced it. I start next month. They do not seem to have an expansive automation framework in place and I am really, really looking forward to walking to work and building something from nothing (or very little). All told, it couldn't have worked out better, haha.
