If it's for coders, two possibilities would be:
Working Effectively With Legacy Code by Michael Feathers, which is basically my favorite book on my favorite topic: getting unit tests wrapped around code that doesn't have unit tests.
or
Clean Code by Bob Martin, which is pretty famous and its reputation probably speaks for it.
If it's for mostly non-coders:
Impact Mapping by Gojko Adzic, which is hellaciously short and full of pictures and which nonetheless contains some solid practical advice on how to decide what to work on, which is one of the toughest development tasks.
or
Perfect Software and Other Illusions About Software Testing by Jerry Weinberg, which basically aims to explain the fundamental problems of software testing to junior testers and people outside the testing area.
If it's for a mix:
Agile Principles, Patterns and Practices by Bob Martin (I'm a fan) is an end-to-end recipe for doing Agile right by one of the people that devised the techniques.
...or my personal favorite:
The Web Application Hacker's Handbook: Finding and Exploiting Security Flaws by Burp Suite developer Dafydd Stuttard. I ran a book club on this two years ago, and - FULL DISCLOSURE - we ended up not finishing the book because it's so goddamn long. That said, every chapter (after the first two intro chapters) is pure gold and will expose everyone to security concepts that anyone involved with web development should learn, and even though we didn't finish the book, I consider the 15-ish hours we spent discussing and doing the exercises* for the first 8 chapters to be one of the best learning experiences I've had on the job.
*The exercises cost money to do, because they spin up a cloud VM for you to hack, but they're dirty cheap (like the book itself).
If you just want to do something interesting and learn a new thing with your coworkers, The Cucumber Book For Java (you're in a Java shop, right?) is a short and easy intro into how to use Cucumber. I found it useful, ymmv. |
