I get what you're saying but the overall premise of having less expectations out of men to emotionally bottle is probably good, I think it's safe to say that either eventually they'll refine to the points they can win on (or someone will for them) or people will filter out the bullshit on their own.

It just feels like broad-stroke preventative maintenance from people who are scared of young males and don't have a vision for them and inadvertently express that fear by drawing a direct link from having a penis to Sandy Hook. There are perfect case studies like Eliot Rodger - a guy who, in every video of him that I saw, could have been saved by some basic Male Patterned Ribbing, i.e. light bullying.

To your specific point though, men bottle their emotions, but (I may be alone here) we can be pretty good at sublimating them in healthy ways, and working them out directly or obliquely. These are features of guys who are *more* masculine, not less, not walking on eggshells.

Let's put the Soloway video on a shelf, here are a few other things that stick out to me:

- Friends of mine and the new Bosley Crowther saying that they're shocked fraternities and sororities are still around. (c.f. American Male.) Frats are condemnable in their current state, but they're extremely old traditions, and if a society is going to have any notions of gender identity (as we do with women) it's the perfect place to build that kind of thing, and to create some lifelong bonds to sustain it. I could have joined a frat in college, opted not to, and left with no friends and hours and hours of loneliness and the feeling of having dodged the college experience. Maybe it was worth it to have dodged the rape part of the experience... maybe.

- This article by Jonathan Haidt, a respected social psychologist now dedicated to viewpoint diversity on college campuses, speaking at some high schools where he encountered naked aggression (political) from female students, the male students stayed relatively mum, and the parents told him the boys feel bullied by the girls.

- Just the fact the American Male video has the MTV label on it, indicating it is trying to connect with youth trends.

I hope this doesn't make me a redpiller/MRA/PUA/Gamergate/Manosphere guy because I don't see myself as having those profound insecurities. But to spike the tetherball back the other direction, I wonder if we've been living in something like the liberal Eisenhower era, and if we've been going too far and unintentionally hurting boys the way women were hurt by postwar prerogatives. The doc seems to be emphasizing empathy and emotional openness, rather than (pace Haidt) seeing fragility as the enemy.
