about whether a news org should be outing the makers of memes that hurt their feelings, as a substitute for punishing the president directly? It's none of their business.
Devil's advocate. Why not? They're reporters. Finding shit out is what they do. The president retweeted it which gives it the marker of "newsworthy." You might not believe that but this involves the current leader of the free world and what he says (or Tweets) makes the cut. Who he's promoting also is fair game. People get dragged into news stories against their will, with rare exception (sexual assault victims, children) the media reports all their names. Dude's not an informant whose life is in danger when his name is revealed (the fucking hypocrite Assange and spare me the death threats spiel) and there's no expectation of privacy on Twitter (Gawker). This isn't NSA wire-tapping or federal subpoenas - they just connected the information in public posts, that he willingly made, to his Facebook, that he also made. He's a middle-aged man so he knows that.
Doxxing is internet courtesy, but reporters aren't obligated to respect it especially when all the information is public and they just connected the dots after the president of the US reposted something you made and you bragged about it.
After Trump tweeted the video on Sunday, "HanA**holeSolo" took to Reddit to say he was "honored," writing "Holy s—!! I wake up and have my morning coffee and who retweets my s—post but the MAGA EMPORER himself!!! I am honored!!" MAGA is an acronym for the President's campaign slogan: Make America great again."
online anonymity is a first amendment responsibility.
It's not though. Courts have given mixed opinions about this. SCOTUS hasn't issued a ruling on whether it's covered. Legally CNN did nothing wrong and by current journalistic standards they have an argument that they're in the clear.
For the record, Chu's argument that it's okay because racism is stupid as shit. |
