The sales guys up top want a site they can pitch to advertisers. They have other sites they're pitching, much more political sites, some clients have no interest in the audience at those sites, it's a niche blue-haired audience that attracts a certain advertiser. The ad guys want to pitch a niche hardcore sports fan audience and that audience wants to paint their face and wear cheese on their head, they don't want to read about the goddamn Covington Kids again, like they get at Deadspin. There needs to be a sports angle. It's the rule, not editorial interfering, it's more a job description. Write for cheese heads not blue hairs, thanks. The Deadspin staff cries but we know what gets clicks! Clicks don't tell you jack shit about your audience. Maybe these new owners, maybe their sales guy's are so old school and clueless they know what they're doing?
It's always been about the advertisers, always has been and still is. These Youtubers are feeling it right now, always bitching about it but they blame the suits at Alphabet, don't seem to get it. If Youtubers say certain words an algo catches it and automatically demonetizes their content. Meanwhile, Fox and CNN can have channels, even Jimmy Kimmel can join in and have the fucking words right there in their titles, monetized fine. It gets the Youtubers seething. See, they need some advertiser liaison, somewhere they shoot their video content for approval and get a nice checkmark from marketing, just like the big boys do in their offices at the networks. They know to bow to advertisers at the networks, so their content doesn't ever need algos to catch them and get them demonetized.
Nobody ever admits it but anybody who didn't get fired will admit it in private: You can criticize your advertiser's product, but you better sure as fuck balance it with two other glowing articles. And never criticize the conglomerate that owns you.
