Do you honestly think that option never occurred to them? I'm sure they looked over the metrics and decided the place couldn't be made profitable right now, even if the writers worked for free. I imagine they also reasoned that turning the site over to whatever losers would be willing to work for free would also destroy any remaining reputation the brand still had left even more quickly than letting it sit dormant. Think of it as one of those abandoned commercial spaces where they leave the lights on to keep vandals away. The owners of such a property aren't going to say, "well, since we aren't using it, we might as well let the area homeless open up a flea market in there. I'm sure that won't negatively impact the property value."
