I think my problem with Black Panther was one of expectations. It was far from the worst Marvel movie, and if I'd went into it expecting another Meteor Man I probably would've been blown away by its adequacy. But I went into it expecting another Thor Ragnarok, which is my favourite Marvel movie (of the ones I've seen, I'm only up to Black Panther) because it wasn't your typical superhero movie, it was more like Flight of the Conchords presents The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. What kind of crazy idiosyncratic afrofuturistic action-comedy was I in for this time? Oh, it's just Batman again, but he's talking at 3/4 speed.
My other favourites so far have been Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Iron Man 3, both of which seemed to sidestep the Marvel movie problem of jokes feeling like obligatory punctuation in scenes that aren't themselves intrinsically funny. Like Thor Ragnarok, I believe they accomplished this by being intrinsically funny, which I understand is not what all superhero movies are going for. Some of them just want to show grown men playing Power Rangers in front of a greenscreen for upwards of fifty minutes at a time, and that's okay too. |
