If the vaccine were 100% effective and we vaccinated everyone, then some dirty Paki coughing on you wouldn't infect you. It couldn't infect you. Like, that's the whole purpose of a vaccine.
The immunity given by a vaccine only lasts so long. For most illnesses, you don't just get a single shot and then you're done for life. Certainly it doesn't look like that will be the case for COVID, based on what we know so far. (People are already getting booster shots...)

Second, how do you reconcile this idea with the historical reality that this didn't happen with polio (and smallpox, and MMR, and...)? We vaccinated the US, eradicated the virus here by the 70s, and despite the fact that swarthy foreigners in less-vaccinated countries could hop a plane here and rub their dusky poop-fingers all over everything, the virus still remains eliminated.
You're trying to tell me we can't win, when it's documented historical fact we've won before using available technology. What the fuck?
Polio requires pooping on someone, COVID just requires breathing on them. Polio doesn't have an animal reservoir, COVID does. We were able to drive polio extinct in the US and almost in the world.
Of smallpox, wikipedia says "smallpox was highly contagious, but generally spread more slowly and less widely than some other viral diseases, perhaps because transmission required close contact and occurred after the onset of the rash." So for the most part, don't touch the horrifyingly disfigured guy, and you'll be OK.
Measles, mumps, and rubella are not extinct and occasionally someone gets them in the US. This is where I think antivaxxers do real damage, when they prevent kids from getting the MMR vaccine. Unlike the COVID vaccine, the MMR vaccine is not a "leaky" vaccine;. it prevents infection completely. Leaky vaccines can push diseases to evolve to be more virulent; hopefully that won't happen with COVID, but you never know.
Anyway, I'm not going to argue about this more. I'll bump this post in a year or two to see who was right -- whether COVID was here to stay, or whether we drove it extinct. Or you can bump it. I hope I'm wrong, but I guess we'll see. |
