It's the source of the expression "the dog that didn't bark." Which is used to describe something NOT happening that is as significant as something that did happen.

Aside from that it's pretty forgettable, yes. Or at least I forgot it.

Reading Sherlock Holmes is really more about the ambiance. You don't really have a chance to solve the mystery on your own because Sherlock will inevitably reveal some hidden piece of information or bullshit chain of deduction that changes everything in the last few pages.

I guess a lot of mystery fiction is like that, but some later writers tried to be "fairer." But not Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Anyway, it might seem like I'm shitting on Sherlock but I actually enjoy reading (or watching a movie) with him every now and then. But you have to know what you're in for. Kind of like how every Batman story will end with Batman punching some grinning supervillain. You strap in for the ride but you kind of know what to expect.
