Reading Sherlock Holmes is really more about the ambiance. You don't really have a chance to solve the mystery on your own because Sherlock will inevitably reveal some hidden piece of information or bullshit chain of deduction that changes everything in the last few pages.

Totally untrue. I see this with other writers but Doyle was very careful in this regard. He generally threw out some red herrings, or tried to, and he had a few crazy ideas. The goofiest one in regards to The Hound of the Baskervilles was the discredited idea of "atavism". So it helps to buy that nonsense to solve the mystery, but it's not required.

I guess a lot of mystery fiction is like that, but some later writers tried to be "fairer." But not Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
