I'm the same, and have had the same experience with managers in my corporate career. I usually get that exact kind of feedback from people who actually can't conceive of a working adult, worthy of any respect at all, who DOESN'T want to be a "people manager." I see them struggling, basically, with wanting to like and respect me but not able to do it.

These are the ones I don't tell about having once been a homeless addict.
