| For example all the FAANGs (Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Apple, etc.) have an engineering career ladder which is separate from the management one. This is one way of figuring out whether you work for a tech company, or just a company that uses technology. If going into management is viewed as the only way to advance, chances are you're in Dilbert-space and you should leave.
But you did say startup, so who knows! Most startups are doomed, but you knew that already. It's fun when your pirate ship and its zany crew of misfits somehow beats the odds and actually finds the treasure and comes back to port (IPO / acquisition) I've had the damndest experiences at startups. I had one guy try to sell me on taking a crappy job offer for his startup because when he founded his next startup (the one AFTER the one he was trying to recruit me to) he would surely remember me. I wanted to stop and ask him, does that actually work on anyone? I've had people pay me in stacks of bills and tell me not to put it in a bank. (That company didn't last long, nor did I stay long after that particular escapade.) I was at one company that decided to "pivot" to iPhone games a week or two after I was hired (their original business was not related to games or iphones) No I don't know objective C, no I don't want to learn! That didn't last long either. Ah, good times. |
