I refunded, then pirated it just to see if I was missing anything past the refund point.
I wish by now that every roguelike would learn the lesson from FTL to not hinge it on surprise bullshit final boss fights, requiring a narrow build.
I wish by now that every roguelike would learn the lesson from FTL on the exact ideal length of a run, plus perfect meta progression that isn't just outside run stat raising.
The Last Spell fails both lessons. The pre-boss waves are simple, but tedious and take way too long. 4+ hours later, you hit the boss who pulls out some gimmick that ignores the previous rules and you'll lose because you weren't expecting it. So you pull another 4+ hour run to be better prepared, and you still might lose depending on how the RNG treated you.
Both the in-run and out of run progression are mostly boring minor stat increases, almost nothing shakes up your approach. The meta perks will eventually dissolve any trace of a challenge, but runs are still going to take anywhere from 4 to 10 hours. Not that there's much of a challenge once you're wise to the boss bullshit, but the meta unlocks will nullify getting screwed by the RNG (the only remaining challenge).
At the end of the day, the basic gameplay isn't anywhere near good enough to justify the time it demands of you. It feels like Into the Breach with 1/10 the tactics and x10 the time sink demand. |
