My biggest gripe with Dune 2 - aside from kind of not caring about the central plot, which seems like a problem, but isn't that big a problem since it's more of an amusement park ride which is a fine thing for a scifi epic to be - was that amongst the very many things that are not fully explained in these movies, the rules of engagement re: tactical combat are extremely unclear. Are they allowed to shoot guns at each other or what? If they are allowed to, why are they stabbing each other with swords?
EXAMPLE: there's a moment where the Fremen stage a raid on a spice harvester. They sneak up on the guys protecting it, and stab them with swords. They do not shoot them with guns, nor do the protectors defend themselves with guns. So, evidently guns are off the menu for some reason, potentially something to do with the kinetic shields or something? Once the protectors are stabbed to death, that results in the dragonfly helicopter shooting at the raiders with a gun. What...? Then the raiders shoot at the helicopter with a bazooka and blow it up. (They need to time this just right because it has shields, which is fine and makes sense but why didn't they shoot the bazooka at the spice harvester and call it a day?)
Once the guys with swords and the helicopter are gone, some other raiders then set up a giant laser beam half a mile away and blow the whole fuckin' harvester up by shooting the top half of it off with a laser. Why...didn't they just do that...? Is there some reason they couldn't just blow it up with their giant laser?
Ironically I bumped harder on this stuff being unexplained than the entire reason why spice is important also being unexplained. |
