I would understand "I still think it's kinda fun...I guess". But not this cultural tsunami everyone is lining up to get bilked $100 and a new system for. I really liked 3/VC/SA although was pretty burned out on GTA by the time 4 came around. I know there's still big fans that really love the cars & driving in that one that are keeping it alive with mods.
Developers & writing were mentioned up thread... and well, that's not 2001 either. Party's over. The, uh, quality and culture of those now staffed in these companies struggle to deliver fun for a myriad of reasons.
This project has already flown far past the point of relevancy as you highlight. There's also no way the budget allows them to really do anything else ever: locked into a similar kind of market as the big hollywood studios. I presume the real play is in the Multiplayer follow up since that did insane business for GTA Online. I don't think there would even be a GTA 6 without that war chest.
Still looks really high risk, and maybe it eventually kills them off (I'm including buyout/merger here but not sure who would even bite tbh). |
