Judging from any representative site, flat forums cause brain cancer, so that option's out. I was thinking a tree view like we have now, but with collapsible subtreads ("branches", let's call them), and auto-collapsing of branches more than X days old. So an all-new thread would look just like it does now, but in a long-running thread, you'd see only new posts and their parents (and their parent's parents, etc.), plus the "root" posts of old branches. Sheer genius. Does your vision of the future include some form of new flag too?
At worst, OMM-style "new" flags (based only on last visit time) are an easy change. A true unread flag will take longer.
Since I haven't yet seen the code, all of this comes straight from my ass.
