This summer, I think I will buy a console. If GTA:VC is not the holy grail (I already have GTA3 for PC), should I still buy a PS2? What's the XBOX got these days? GC sux...unless you have lots of PALS because believe me, fag, they all have GC and Super Smash Brothers Melee and they will expect you to know your shizzat. Part of my Christmas haul was a PS2 but the resident console fags have all started complaining about how GC has the superior gameage for group action and my brother theorizes that by this time next year the PS2 will be the Genesis to the GC SNES. PS2 pros: Devil May Cry, Gauntlet: Dark Legacy, DOA ports and Tekken licenses. PS2 cons: Devil May Cry voice actors; a hundred different variations on Jax and Daxter. I don't know what the situation is in your area but at the video stores around here the only PS2 games they have to rent are FFX, Nebula of Sports Titles, Galaxy of Unenviably Unattractive FPSes. Yawn. The console is apparently capable of more than 256 shades of black, brown, and red, but the majority of developers seem to disagree with me.

Also: get a Dreamcast before you get an XBox. At least the DC has fuckin' Virtual On. Plus authentic neo-retro cache!

Okay, so I want a REAL PS2 RPG. All the "linear 4 sheezy" lines I heard about FFX has turned me off of even renting the fucker, so what else is there? I don't mind obscenely cute/twee. Also I have a long panty-dampening history with console puzzle games. GC has that swankity Tetris thing - any can't-miss gay puzzle action on PS2?

Yeah gamecube is the best if you constantly have 3 other people to play with, or if you REALLY love resident evil. All their single player games tend to suck.

I really liked Star Ocean 2 for the PS1, in fact it was my favorite RPG for that console (aside from the first few hours of FF7) combat is a little more action oriented than your standard RPG, I saw it as Secret of Mana with auto targetting. The large number of skills (a lot non-combat) and NPC interaction in towns was fun. There's also that Arc the Lad collection, if you liked Lunar the same people (working designs) worked on it so it might be good.

My understanding is that the only RPG for the PS2 approaching the halfway point of decent is FF10. I've heard mixed reviews of Grandia 2, everything else is supposed to be horrible (no one liked Empheral Phantasmal or whateverthefuck).

Of course I also couldn't stand FF8 on any level, don't get the appeal of "whoever has the best cards wins" Triple Triad, and thought FF10 was amusing for awhile, so trust my opinion at your own risk.
