What, you think we've evolved at all since the Romans going bezerk while tens of gladiators died for their amusement? Fuck, not only are we working off the same genepool, we've inherited a significant amount of our culture from them. We're exhibitionists, bread-and-circus unevolved simians every last one. It's a great irony that the so-called 'savages' we wiped out on this continent seem to have had a lot more respect for life than the 'civilized' men who've replaced them - but that observation has been made so many times it's become a platitude. It seems to me that increasing civilization dehumanizes and places the onus of natural selection upon tools rather than creators.
This is my deepest fear. I feel like we've reached a place in history where technological advances have far outstripped our ability to come to grips with it. We can do lots of things, but are increasingly unsure of whether they're the right things to do. Technology is racing along an exponential curve at light speed, but our wisdom, what little we have, is progressing along a linear at a snail's pace. How many more generations, I wonder, until we leapfrog up in magnitude to the next generation of weapons? Some pretty little box that will make nukes look as clumsy and inefficient at killing as a goddamn club. Not long, I'd wager. I know how you drool over all things nano, but do you really think we're in any way ready for the implications of nano? The weapons nano will give us? Look at how hard it is keeping nuclear tech out of the hands of retards in this world. What chance will we have with the next wave of superweapon tech?
We haven't learned nearly enough. We can't seem to overcome our animal urges to kill each other, and we're only getting better and better at crafting new ways to do that.
Well, what the fuck. We had a hell of a run, didn't we? We had some laughs, some good times, right? Maybe they'll get it right next time. I hope we can at least leave our notes intact somewhere.
Last one out turn off the lights...
