DAOC
The first game MMORPG I played was Dark Age of Camelot. I was tricked into it by Chet and Erik. I'll never forget the first time I saw the Wolf3D-level majesty that was Camelot, wandering around, asking every single guard to give me directions to Andreasytheas McFuckdacowicus so I could sell him the two bit dagger I made for a net loss of forty pieces of silver. And the physics - oh, the physics - running around the corner in the fighter's guild into a hallway taken right out of CGA-era Curse of the Azure Bonds only to fall through the floor, plummet 3AU to my doom...and then land on the sky with a tiny 'splash'. The game was empty, even at the peak usage times the distances between points of interest was incredible, everyone huddled in the areas where a couple monsters would spawn, and the frigging horses from place to place were barely faster than your character. On the other hand, when I went exploring unmapped areas I found places up in Scotland where the guards see you're from Camelot and attack you with a beer mug, a nice touch of realism in a fantasy game.
On the other hand the game is very addictive and the people (not just chet and erik) were great. There was something about that game that drove off children, so 90% of the time you're grouping with an equally-pasty SWM who has an unfortunate interest in Civil War Era military dress. Since then they've improved the graphics and now you only fall through the ground if you're around so many other people the astroturf can't support all of you (you still make a little splash! I think they left it in for nostalgia). If you haven't played EQ this has all the best bits of that without the gay furry shit.
