In many ways, I think you are right. The only place that I differ is in the options I see before Sharon. Rather, it is not merely short term planning at stake, but rather some big picture thinking at work. I think the removal of Iraq as a factor in the backing of Palestinian terrorist elements removes one of the fundamental planks upon which their legitimacy, such as it is, rests: If x number of (resentment oriented, oppressive, corrupt) arab regimes support us directly, we can continue to play our games indefinately. As in any civilization, reasonably people only rise to the top when all other alternatives are exhausted. I think the current holocaust-denying fuckhead in charge of the Palestinians is light years ahead of Arafat in terms of having a serious interest in something other than raw personal gain in the short term: to wit, personal gain in the long term. It is my hope that given a sufficiently strong US foreign policy, that will be sufficient to reach some real progress in the region, rather than yet another blue helmet mediated debacle.

I do know for a fact that even the most hard line of Israelis have become, if nothing else, severely disenchanted with the future prospects of the settlements. That, at the very least, is progress. Now if we could just get Arabs to understand that killing in the name of something is not inherently virtuous if it accomplishes nothing....
