In stories where there's just one kid, younger than 12 (The Shining, Cujo, Firestarter), the kid is always much smarter than he/she should be. Seven-year-olds talking like teenagers, f'rinstance. He only got it right with The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, but just barely. So not only does he fixate on kids, he doesn't even get it right. Stick with adults, Steve, those characterizations he's good at.
