Terrible by Fussbett 09/26/2004, 4:40am PDT There is value in putting out a movie that is like nothing else out there right now. This is why I feel bad about carving on Sky Captain, but it's terrible. In being a "throwback", you get that crazy cool retro style and old action adventure serial feel which we worshipped in Raiders of the Lost Ark. But inside the time capsule are also all the old stereotypes, clichés and contrivances that we ditched and agreed sucked long ago. Travel to far off places (for no fucking reason), get in comical jams, find a way out in the nick of time, Sky Captain saves the day and the female lead is an unappealing lying bitch. There were some bright moments, a nice ending note, and believe me I know it sounds crazy for me to say a movie like this is ridiculous, but I mean there is only so much I can take. I wish the dying Shangri-La miner's star staff could show me the co-ordinates to enjoying the movie more. STYLE TANGENT: a school of thought in editing decrees that dissolves are a crutch for amateurs and wipes are outright crimes. SKatWoT starts off with an obnoxious over eagerness to showcase its kooky avant-noir style and in the first 10 minutes it seemed like every other cut was a dissolve. The over-the-top editing and photography (pun ahead) faded, mercifully yet quizzically, but at the half-way point a wipe appeared out of nowhere. The end. Resident Evil Apocalypse was much worse. Mean Girls was much better.
