On the US side, we have the entire textiles industry, the entire agricultural industry, and the entire aerospace industry. I don't see much difference between protection of inefficient industries from competition on either side of the Atlantic.
I have no real opinion on what's causing slow European adoption of IT; it could be culture, it could be government barriers to change, or it could just be random chance. It's not like any other first world country has really adopted IT, either. Need more evidence.
Is there a real theory behind "taxation causes lower growth?" Growth is productivity driven; productivity is driven by invention + investment; it's highly unlikely taxes significantly change the rate of invention, so it's all got to be in investment. But if anything, I seem to remember Europe having higher rates of investment than we do. I agree that taxation causes deadweight loss, but I don't see why that'd show up in growth differences. |
