Complaining ad nauseum about the new Dawn of War patch by laudablepuss 07/05/2005, 2:55pm PDT
laudable: Hey, downloaded the 1.3 patch for DOW yet?
FABIO: that patch aint going to do much good with the game not installed
laudable: Hmm. That's probably true.
laudable: So you're done with it then
FABIO: unless some really amazing and drastic change occurs
laudable: Well, the changes are fairly extensive, but not what I'd call amazing.
laudable: I'll write a big long rambling post on Caltrops then
FABIO: link me to the list of changes
laudable: http://www.mofunzone.com/game_patch_downloads/warhammer_40_000_dawn_of_war_1_3.shtml
laudable: My complaints focus on a few things not mentioned.
FABIO: how about that seer council
laudable: Space Marines now have happy feet. It takes them all damn day to get into position if the terain isn't perfectl flat and featureless
laudable: No Seer Council changes
laudable: They're broken beyond repair now
FABIO: removal of versital stance? wha?
laudable: You're ALWAYS in the versatile stance now
FABIO: i don't even remember that stance
laudable: Your guys politely put away their guns and draw their knives when attacked by axe wielding orks
laudable: Before I could order my guys to just keep firing
FABIO: oh wow they've fixed a bunch of bugs in the single player campaign, thank god
laudable: That stance was mostly for Terminators and stuff
laudable: Yeah, what a relief
FABIO: what the fuck?
FABIO: fixed bug where Exarchs could not be added while squad was moving.

fixed bug where Exarchs could be built while squad was moving
FABIO: WHICH IS IT????

laudable: Beats the fuck out of me. I read the bit about the Prism Tanks and decided I didn't like the Eldar anymore
laudable: Defilers are now only 2 cap points
laudable: So my friend made 10 of them. They were pretty much unstoppable
laudable: Scouts are now barely animated walking cadavers
laudable: I think they're weaker than cultists now
laudable: I love how "Cultist reinforce time when in combat set to 12 seconds" is under Space Marines.
laudable: They finally got around to alphabetizing my unit color schemes, but only in the multiplayer screen. In the color editor, they're still not alphabetical
laudable: God knows what these developers smoke all day
laudable: New feature: lag switching between non-game screens. Like moving from the main menu to the multiplayer menu. Or creating a new server. Fun!
laudable: Also, it takes about 2 minutes longer to load levels for some reason
FABIO: i dont get half these changes
laudable: And saved replays don't work again. Oops!
FABIO: possessed marines reduced cost, reduced effectiveness
FABIO: ......huh?
laudable: Meanwhile, Nob squad damage is increased. They weren't effective enough?
laudable: I thought they were hell on wheels
FABIO: pink horrors, reduced cost and effectiveness....huh?
laudable: Yeah what? :-(
laudable: Nobody uses them, so whatever.
FABIO: nob squads were ungodly powerful, it's just they took FOREVER to build up to full strength
laudable: Do the developers ever play the game?
FABIO: the problem with pink horrors has always been that you couldn't reinforce them, so if you lost one or two, you might as well delete the whole squad to make population room
laudable: Cool, a squad that can't be reinforced. Great idea.
FABIO: plus the fact that they cost the same as the much much MUCH more powerful possessed marines
FABIO: wow, nothing about the completely ridiculous marine late game
laudable: But they're called HORRORS OHNOS. The name makes them kickass
FABIO: or the worthless chaos obliterators
laudable: No, it's easier and quicker to get there! Look, the third upgrade to the marine fortress is cheaper and quicker
FABIO: jesus fuck
laudable: The game plays totally differently now
laudable: I really can't tell you how weird it is
FABIO: drop one minimal strength squad with force commander right into enemy base, orbital bombard to instantly destroy half of it
FABIO: let force commander die, build new one with fresh orbital bombardment ready to go
laudable: I guess any game based on the Games Workshop crap would have to change the rules every week. That's just how they do it for some reason.
FABIO: building a new one is much quicker than waiting for bombardment to recharge
laudable: Really?
laudable: I hadn't noticed that.
laudable: Insane.
FABIO: and being able to orbital drop dreadnaughts 0_O
laudable: That's just fucking huge
FABIO: if they just made it so you could only drop hellfire dreadnaughts
laudable: I was about to say that I generally don't build predators or landraiders, just dreadnoughts
FABIO: it would make drop less broken, plus hellfires would actually have a use
laudable: That'd be a pretty good idea. As it is, nobody builds them unless they're short on power for some reason
FABIO: predators/landraiders are useful for going around the map taking out listening posts, that's about it
FABIO: so they STILL haven't fixed building listening posts on points you're trying to capture?
laudable: I send out landspeeders for that job. Way faster and way cheaper.
laudable: No, now the AI does it
laudable: It'll drop listening posts three or more times while you're trying to take it.
FABIO: still no eldar turret fix
laudable: Yeah, they can still build wherever they feel like it
FABIO: i take it warp spiders still tear orks the fuck apart
laudable: Of course
FABIO: and now orcs have to wait longer to get vehicles
laudable: And the wartruck is weaker
FABIO: warp spiders: evaporate orc infantry, get anti-vehicle grenades to kill their vehicles
laudable: Meanwhile chaos builds 10 deflilers and plunges the universe into darkness
laudable: GO CHAOS
laudable: My new favorite race
FABIO: yeah marine infantry seems kind of doomed against that
laudable: Plus the marine infantry are like dogs circling three times to lie down. They don't want to set themselves. They move around, never shoot their missiles, die.
laudable: It says the force commander's stun time is reduced in the Space Marine section, but I think that applies to all the commanders
FABIO: i thought only the FC stunned people
FABIO: it was ridiculous, the FC won every single commander duel no matter what
laudable: Oh!
FABIO: hmmmm should I buy the expansion pack o_O
laudable: I see, I thought it was the time he gets stunned when a missile flattens him
laudable: Gee
laudable: Do you have money that you were planning to set on fire?
laudable: This would be a slightly worse use for it.
FABIO: the FC stunned people with his hammer from time to time
FABIO: if he did it to your commander, he just kept doing it over and over and you never got to fight back
laudable: Neato
FABIO: i always thought they should delay when you could get a commander
FABIO: getting them right out of a barracks was ridiculous at the stage in the game where all you had was basic infantry and skirmishers
laudable: I remember being shocked at how powerful they were. It forces you to build your own immediately or build a couple turrets
laudable: Infantry just has no chance, even if you have lots of it
laudable: A farseer can eat two entire squads of marines early in the game
FABIO: yeah, it really cuts down on your starting diversity strategies
FABIO: two strategies: 1. get a commander right away, 2. Die
laudable: Hmm.
laudable: I can't decide
laudable: You should load it up and get a good angry feeling going.
FABIO: anger leads to hate :-(
laudable: I have to buy the expansion, unfortunately. I have a morbid curiosity about this now.
FABIO: mail me your frisbee coaster when done
laudable: Haha will do.
