Re: Get ready to buy a new PS2 by FABIO 10/06/2004, 2:25pm PDT
I was getting disc read errors constantly about a year ago. Someone here posted a link to an article oging through how to open up your PS2 and fiddle with screws to tighten the lens or something. I got about halfway through the steps before I looked at all the electronic innards and realized I was over my head. I settled with washing my hands and running my thumb against the lense before putting the cover back on.

PROBLEM 100% SOLVED!

Doesn't Sony charge like $200 to repair PS2's? FUCK YOU, SONY! I don't go around shoving my thumb up peoples' asses and charging two benjamins for it. MAYBE I SHOULD START!

Hopefully your PS2 isn't fucked beyond recovery, but I'm very wary of the 30001 models. The load times were so much worse, the fan noise was so much worse, basically it was just so much worse. Get a 50001 if you haven't already.

How do tell which model it is? I bought mine August 2001.

Aren't PS2's still like $200? Or is that the model that comes with an internet connection, hard drive, and all those whistles? Can you even buy the standalone models anymore?

I really really think it's just the disc though. Every other game works fime. And the scratch marks (deep looking and running all jagged from center outwards) were way too severe to be caused by anything in the PS2 (I still don't know what could have fucking caused them. As far as I know the disc was in the PS2 for a week straight).

It's weird, before the toothpaste it wouldn't detect the disc at all on the memory card screen and just give me "disc read error". After the "toothpaste incident" it would detect the disc and have it show up on the memory card menu, but after selecting it the screen would go black, then after 10 seconds briefly flash back to the memory card screen again before fading to black and going to the weird "insert PS2 format disc" red cube screen.

I just tried the tan goop again and now when I select the disc I at least get to the Playstation 2 logo before it stays on a black screen.

Someone here said white brillo pads included in repair kits are BAD. Can you clarify on those pads? This one came with a bunch of circular white pads, but they're like gauze instead of brillo.
