My enjoyment of Morrowind began and ended with breaking into houses. Past that it was lots of walking and clumsy combat that made System Shock 2 seem like Serious Sam. Plus the breaking into houses portions still wasn't nearly as fun as it was in Thief.
Is the third Thief game pretty open-ended? I've heard that it's good, but I can't trust the opinion of the Internet at large. Thief is also the only context in which I hate zombies. Help me, Fabio.
I think people who love Morrowind want so badly to play around in a fully realized virtual RPG world that they blind themselves to the fact that this game is a slower paced System Shock 2 where instead of collecting cyber modules to upgrade your stats towards competent, you tape down the jump key for 5 hours to max out your acrobatics skill or some crap.
Yeah, but you can also just buy skill upgrades. In that way it's very realistic as wealth is the most important thing and having it really opens a lot of doors for you. I played Morrowind as a girl, so of course combat wasn't going to be any fun. But by stealing everything not nailed down, selling it and then increasing my "acrobatics" or some shit through money I was able to play through Morrowind until I came to the inevitable conclusion that it is utterly without soul and that Bethesda desperately needs one writer at the company who has read something other than fantasy fiction and understands that engaging writing requires something more than 25-consonanted nouns.
