IT story #1, 2006:
RETROSPECT ASIDE: Retrospect is some goofy ass Mac backup client that everyone in the world hates, save for the by-the-hour IT people. I think these reviews say it all. It's already installed on our office server. | At work we have a LaCie NetDisk, aka an ethernet drive or NAS drive. One of my first tasks as new manager was to make sure the backup process was all working, and since the NetDisk was not being backed up at all, I called the IT provider of record to come up with a plan to back it up. His plan was to by an equal sized external firewire hard drive, hook it up to the NetDisk, and then make Retrospect simply copy over the contents of the NetDisk every 3:00am. Sounds fine! Thursday I wasn't in the office, but this was the day the IT guy came by with the drive and and some bad karma. I get a call from the receptionist: the IT guy wants to take the NetDisk, with all of our work files on it, back to his office to work on it. I ask if the drive is broken. "Yes". This is a big change from Wednesday when the drive worked. Friday I get word that the operating system on the NetDisk is corrupt and needs to be reinstalled. Only LaCie can do this. The drive is with them and they're working on recovering our data. I hope everyone notices the irony of this outcome as I was trying BACK UP the data.
As funny as that is, we discover, through the grapevine, that LaCie doesn't charge for data recovery of failed drives. The drives shouldn't fail so they swallow that time spent. This doesn't stop the IT guy from giving me a $500 data restoration bill today.
IT story #2, 1998:
After discovering the problem, Lazlo hands me the corrupt Colorado backup tape that had been causing our problems, grins and says "bad date".
"Heh yeah."
"Bad date."
"Ok."
"You know what that's from?"
"Indiana Jones?"
"Right! Haha!"
And so ends another awkward IT moment in history. |
